The Science

There is overwhelming evidence that COVID-19 is airborne.

In a recent study ” Mechanisms of airborne transmission ” concluded :

  • Traditionally, it was thought that respiratory pathogens spread between people through large droplets produced in coughs and through contact with contaminated surfaces (fomites).

  • However, several respiratory pathogens are known to spread through small respiratory aerosols, which can float and travel in air flows, infecting people who inhale them at short and long distances from the infected person.

  • Wang et al. review recent advances in understanding airborne transmission gained from studying the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections and other respiratory pathogens.

  • The authors suggest that airborne transmission may be the dominant form of transmission for several respiratory pathogens, including SARS-CoV-2, and that further understanding of the mechanisms underlying infection from the airborne route will better inform mitigation measures.

CO2 acts as proxy for the accumulation of exhalation of human respiratory aerosols.

  • In a recent study the research team concluded the following:
CO2 is co-exhaled with aerosols containing SARS-CoV-2 by COVID-19-infected people and can be used as a proxy of SARS-CoV-2 concentrations indoors.

  • Indoor CO2 measurements by low-cost sensors hold promise for mass monitoring of indoor aerosol transmission risk for COVID-19 and other respiratory diseases.

  • We derive analytical expressions of CO2-based risk proxies and apply them to various typical indoor environments.

⚠️The relative infection risk in a given environment scales with excess CO2 level, and thus, keeping CO2 as low as feasible in a space allows optimization of the protection provided by ventilation.

Accounting for the absence of other authors (ie stoves , heaters etc). We can reasonably conclude that there is insufficient ventilation and that you are at risk of a higher rebreathe rate. ie at 800pm you are breathing in 1% of the air, that has come out of the mouth of another person.

Aranet4 comes with a traffic light system and alert feature; time to open some windows to allow more fresh in, to replace the stale air.

Qualification:

  • in cases where there is filtration , higher levels of Co2 may be tolerated

No, however, it does mean you have sufficient ventilation in that space to reduce the risk of potential exposure. In no way or shape, is the improvement of ventilation a silver bullet; it’s a complimentary layer that works with masks, social distancing , CO2 monitoring and filtration. Implemented in unison, they can significantly reduce the risk of exposure.

James Reason, a professor of psychology at the University of Manchester in the UK used the idea of the swiss cheese model.

The concept; layers of mitigation, are less effective individually and more efficient when used in unison.
The idea behind the systems approach is to build in layers of barriers and safeguards.

To combat Covid 19, we ought to apply all of the following mitigations;

  • Testing protocols
  • Masking
  • Physical Distancing
  • Hand hygiene
  • Ventilation with the support of CO2 monitoring data
  • Filtration and
  • Vaccinations

Aranet4 measures four environmental parameters of air:
  • CO2 (carbon dioxide) levels
  • Temperature
  • Relative humidity and
  • Atmospheric pressure

The first three of the measurements are displayed on the screen of the device, and you can access the atmospheric pressure reading via the Aranet4 app.

Aranet4 uses non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) sensor for measuring the CO2 level.

The device has a small gas chamber with infrared light source in which CO2 absorbs the light. An optical filter in front of a detector then filters all of the light except the wavelength that the CO2 molecules can absorb so a precise measurement of the CO2 level can be made.

This type of CO2 reading provides a higher precision than regular electrochemical sensors because carbon dioxide is uniquely detectable with no interference from other gasses. Additionally, the lifespan of the NDIR sensor is much longer because there is no deterioration or “burnout” of the sensor itself, and less recalibration is needed.

In New Zealand , a scientist managing the rollout of CO2 monitors in schools warned,  “What we want to avoid is really sort of rogue, poor quality instruments being brought into schools that are giving inaccurate data and leading to poor decision making.

The Aranet4 app for iPhone is available on the App Store.

The Aranet4 app for Android is available on Google Play.

The traffic system is a type of alert system, which, is both visual and auditory in nature. The three colored dots indicate CO2 levels in the air and by application, the relative risk. The CO2 level is measured in parts per million (ppm). As a reference point, outdoor air is approximately 400 – 450 ppm. The recommended guidelines , during COVID, are as follows. Green – good (below 600 ppm). Yellow – average (800 ppm).
  • 15% brain cognitive function decline
  • 1 % rebreathe occurs at 800pm
Red – unhealthy (1400 ppm).
  • 50% brain cognitive function decline
  • 3 % rebreathe occurs at 1400pm

Note: Guidelines may be varied depending on industry. A gym , for example, requires more air exchanges and other mitigation layers to reduce risk.

Technical

Once you have removed the device from the box, use the getting started guide to turn on the device.

Thereafter you can pair your mobile phone to the device using the downloadable Aranet4 app.

You can watch the video here.

Not at all. Aranet4 works with batteries which can last up to 3.9 years if used as a stand-alone device without Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connection to the phone app and with the device data measurement refresh interval set to 10 minutes.

Measurement interval (min) – Battery lifespan
10min             –             3.9 years
5min              –             2.4 years
2min              –             1.1 years
1min               –             0.6 years
Yes, you can pair multiple Aranet4 devices to your phone via the Aranet4 app.

Unlimited number of Aranet4 devices can be paired to a single smart device – for example if you want to have an Aranet4 air quality sensor in multiple rooms in your home.

A key difference is that the Aranet4 PRO readings , when paired with the PRO base station , can be accessed remotely via the cloud.

Both versions of the device work via bluetooth and can connect to the Aranet4 app.

New York Times - Article

Aranet4 is not waterproof and should not be used in environments with high humidity (higher than 85%). Using a waterproof box is also not recommended as it could delay measurements and results in incorrect data.

Aranet4 is not impact resistant – dropping it on the ground or subjecting it to strong mechanical impact can permanently damage the sensor.

🚨 The standard Aranet4 warranty doesn’t cover accidental damage such as dropping the device.

Excluding the batteries , the NDIR sensor , can last up to 15 years.

The battery life of two AA batteries that the device uses is up to 3.9 years at 20°C / 68°F.
The batteries can last up to 3.9 years only if Aranet4 is used as a stand-alone device without Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connection to phone application and data measurement refresh interval of the device is set to 10 minutes.

🚨 For reference: The average lifespan of all apple products on the market between 2013 and today is 4 years 3 months – Asymco Research

All the data can be exported as a CSV file.

The amount of the stored historic measurement data depends on the measurement interval of the device:
Measurement interval, minutes   –   Data availability (days)
2, 5, 10 minutes                –                 7 days
1 minutes                          –                  3.5 days

Once you reach the max availability days, The data that is older than the possible storage period:
– will be automatically overwritten in the device memory with the new measured data.

Tip: Plan a weekly download schedule depending on the data availability expiry date.
There are multiple use cases for both the co2 devices and air purifiers:
